One thing I have noticed with being in the Beauty industry is more and more we try to change the way we look. Cover up this, change the shape of that. Doing professional makeup one thing I always do is tell my client how beautiful they are. They never believe me. So, I tell them what is beautiful about them. Pointing out their high cheek bones, or their beautiful eye shape. Things we don't see ourself. I see these videos on youtube of girls completely changing the way they look. Its one thing to use makeup to enhance out beauty, but it's another to change your look completely. You have freckles? embrace it! I want to start doing videos to show how to do your makeup to enhance your beauty. To keep it light and easy. No tricks here. You will become confident in your own skin more and more the more you see that you don't need to hide it all. I've noticed that a lot of women don't even know how to use makeup. They are just following what they see, but don't know exactly why they need to use concealer or foundation. I noticed that I haven't written a blog since 2014.  Sorry everyone.  I have been busy with my business. 

Now is the time to talk about sun tanning and sunscreens.  It is very important to wear a sunscreen anytime you go outside.  If you are going to a ball game.  If you are playing tennis or golf.  If you are gardening.  If you are playing outside with your children.  If you are going for a walk.  It is important to wear sunscreen.  If you are going for a drive, wear sunscreen.  The UV rays DO penetrate through the glass.  And, the best protection to wear is a sunscreen with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.  They reflect UV rays.  It is important to reapply the sunscreen if you are out for a long period of time.  Especially if you are swimming or sweating.  And please, please, please, put sunscreen on your children!!!  It doesn't matter if they tan easily.  They still need protection!!!  

Also, read the expiration dates on your sunscreen.  They usually have a 2 year shelf life.  If it's expired, don't use it.  It won't work!  Yes, a little tan looks healthy.  Believe it or not, you will tan with sunscreen on.  But remember this...a tan means that your melanin cells are sacrificing themselves to protect you from the UV rays!!!

After I do a fantastic treatment on my client's skin, she loves how she looks. 

And she will ask, "How long can I keep my face looking like this?" 

I tell her "It depends on what you do at home.  Do you cleanse twice a day?  Do you moisturize properly?  Do you  wear sunscreen daily?  Do you use the right products?"

The she will ask me what I recommend for her to use at home.  And, immediately she follows that with "What can I buy at the grocery/drug store?" 

I tell her that most products out there made for the skin are not harmful to the skin.  But, does she really know what she's getting when she purchases a product at a drug store or a grocery store?  There are so many brands of products.  Which one is best for her skin?  Most of the "over the counter" products are 70 to 80% water.  So, she is not getting the most out of that product and she ends up using more of that product with each application than a professional product.  Also, if she doesn't like it, it will sit on her bathroom counter or shelf. 

A professional product line is the best way to go for many reasons.  One of the reasons is you will have a professional recommend it for you and that professional will stand behind that product.  If the product isn't working the way you want it to, the professional will find out why and recommend another for you. 

The other reason is because it's a professional product, it is more concentrated and will last longer.  Usually, you only need to use a nickle to a dime size of the product.

I had a client tell me that she didn't like MAC's eye shadows.   Now, personally, I think MAC is an amazing makeup line.  I asked her why she didn't like MAC.  She told me that it was too dark and heavy for her.  So I asked her what eye shadows had she used before.  She told me a product from a drug store.  There was the problem. 

She was used to using a lot of product to get the results that she wanted.  And so when she applied MAC, which is very concentrated in pigment, it was too much for her.  And, I explained that to her.  A little goes a long way!!!  And that is the way a product should be.

And, a professional makeup artist or esthetician should always stand behind his or her products.  If a client isn't happy with the product, always ask questions.  Make sure the client is using it properly.  And, ask what results the client is looking for.  And remember that it is always about the client...

The idea is to make her look and feel her best!!!

I have had many clients through out my 30 years in the business.  They all want to look beautiful.  I tell them they already look beautiful and they do.  The issue is that they have conditions on their skin that they see and focus on that make them not feel beautiful. 

That is where I come into their lives.  I study their skin and look at their condition.  And, I do my very best to remove or minimize their condition so that they can see their beautiful skin. 

We all have conditions on our skin.  It could be acne at puberty or adult acne.  Both are caused by hormones.   So to take care of the issue also lies in keeping the hormones balanced as well as a good skin care regiment. 

The condition could be hyperpigmentation (dark spots or stains on our skin).  Most of that is caused by the SUN.  A tan looks great until it leaves an uneven cluster of dark spots behind.  Hyperpigmentation can also be caused by hormones (birth control pills, pregnancy, menopause) which gets enhanced by the sun.  Medication, Perfumes, Intense Exfoliation, Acne, and even anti-perspirant can cause hyperpigmentation.  You can't avoid the sun, but you can wear sunscreen and hats when you're out for a long period of time.  You can even get the rays of the sun through the window of the car.  It takes good skin care treatments, a good skin care regiment at home, and a lot of patience to minimize hyperpigmentation.

Another condition clients come to see me for is aging.  There is no formula out there that can stop the aging process.  Even plastic surgery doesn't stop aging.  Gravity and living ages our skin.  That is a fact of life.

But, you can prolong the aging of your skin with proper treatments and skin care.  One of the biggest and simplest way to minimize the sign of aging skin (fine lines and wrinkles) is hydration.  And I mean more than just drinking a sufficient amount of water.  Hydrate with a good moisturizer.  And yes, the sun does age the skin faster.  So does improper skin care, stress, smoking, and too much alcohol.

So with all this, you might want to know what works for your skin.  Whatever condition you have on your skin, you need to make sure you are using the proper cleanser, moisturizer, and exfoliant.  You should cleanse and moisturized morning and evening.  And, you should exfoliate once or twice a week.
